BUSINESS NEWS

  • In Alba, Matt Olds and his father Bob of B&D Trucks, Parts & Towing maintain heated barns to thaw snow and ice on trucks during whiteout conditions. They stock essential safety equipment & answer 24-hour emergency calls.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Traverse City's State Theatre canceled its shows due to a roof leak that damaged the building; tickets for Saturday's performances were refunded. The theatre will assess repairs before resuming programming.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Dracula, a new R-rated film about a 15th-century prince cursed after his wife’s death, played Feb. 6 at the State Theatre in Traverse City and at regional venues. The film mixes historical drama with supernatural themes for local audiences.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education will vote at 6 p.m. on Monday to approve 14 bids totaling over $4.26 million for West Middle School renovations and a new addition to support its music program — projects funded by capital bond funds.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Northwestern Michigan College maritime and freshwater programs figured prominently in Michigan’s newly released Maritime Strategy, which gathered input from over 200 state participants. Local groups like Traverse Connect helped show the region’s blue technology drive (as seen at Discovery Pier).  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Signal work will close the northbound right lane of Herkner Road and the westbound right turn lane of Long Lake Road beginning at 8:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9 — closures are expected to last a few hours as the county installs signal detection.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local and state officials are finalizing a partnership to reopen the shuttered nonprofit dental clinic United We Smile after the Michigan Legislature set aside ($2.9M) for it; the clinic once served 2,300 patients, including veterans, pregnant women, and children.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Right Brain Brewery will host the Michigan State Pinball Championships from Feb. 13 - 15, attracting players to a venue known as the Pinball Capital of the North. The tournament promises fun competition for pinball enthusiasts in the community.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
