CULTURE NEWS

  • Bow Wow and Soulja Boy have been added to the National Cherry Festival lineup and will perform Sunday, July 5 on the Pepsi Bayside Music Stage along West Grand Traverse Bay. Tickets, priced from $55 to $180, go on sale Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. online + the performance will feature early-2000s hits.  UpNorthLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kiwanis Club of Traverse City recognized Hailey Nickerson from Traverse City West High School as a Student of the Month yesterday. She earned honors for her academic achievements and athletic contributions, maintains a 3.86 GPA, and is dual-enrolled at Northwestern Michigan College.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts warn that accelerating warming is expected to reduce ice cover and harm whitefish in Lake Michigan by the early 2030s. A 2025 study (led by University of Illinois professor Donald Wubbles and supported by local officials) finds that warmer water species may replace cold water fish.  UpNorthLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers in Michigan are questioning the rural classification method that affects $173 million in healthcare grants. Northern lawmakers worry that grouping counties like Grand Traverse (and Leelanau) with urban areas will make it harder to secure funds, and they plan to reexamine the criteria in future discussions.  UpNorthLive
