- ➤ The Empire Lions Club is hosting a benefit pancake breakfast at Empire Township Hall from 8 a.m. until noon tomorrow to raise funds for an Almira Township family whose 13-year-old son was injured in a Jan. 17 house fire. Traverse City Record-Eagle

- ➤ The Great Indoor Folk Festival will take place on Feb. 22 at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Ben Traverse will perform for the fourth time at an event that brings together nearly 100 local performers. Traverse City Record-Eagle
- ➤ Three North Ed students among six winners of the Page2Stage contest will have their plays staged at the City Opera House on Sunday, April 12 at 1:30 p.m. They will work with theater mentors and receive a $100 award to develop their scripts. 9&10 News

- ➤ Traverse City officials and the Grand Traverse Conservation District are planning a new outdoor summer day camp at Hickory Hills. The camp will offer hikes and nature lessons once it obtains a licensed day camp designation. 9&10 News
- ➤ Northwestern Michigan College board will discuss a $2 million investment for the Freshwater Research and Innovation Center on Monday, Feb. 23 — the proposal depends on the Boardman Lake Campus sale and construction is underway as the center gears up for a spring opening. 9&10 News
- ➤ Northwestern Michigan College trustees will meet on Feb. 23 to discuss applying Boardman Lake Campus sale proceeds to a geothermal project at Front Street Campus. They will also consider establishing a designated fund for remaining funds (sale approved Jan. 26). 9&10 News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Access MI solar program will offer discounted rates on solar installations to ease grid strain (following last year's ice storm) and boost renewable energy use, with homeowners like Paul Deyo calling it a sound investment in energy independence. 9&10 News

- ➤ The Downtown Development Authority proposed a retail sustainability study after long-held commercial buildings began being sold, raising concerns that new owners could increase costs for local small businesses.
