COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After years of planning, city commissioners met with Downtown Development Authority CEO Harry Burkholder & design team members to approve moving forward with a new shelter for the Sara Hardy Farmers Market, a project that fits the city’s strategic plan.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Military Working Dog Team Support Association (MWDTSA) will deliver 225 care packages today to honor retired military dogs in Traverse City using donations from local businesses and volunteers; each box contains treats, toys, collars, and bones.  9&10 News
  • Three weeks ago, Traverse City lost veteran diplomat Jack Segal (80) who served his country and engaged local students at NMC’s International Affairs Forum. His passion for teaching and public service shaped our community and continues to inspire future leaders.  UpNorthLive
  • The Great Start Collaborative will host free playgroup events for children ages 0 to 5 in March at Neighborhood Network sites in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties. EDUCATION NEWS

  • A state-commissioned report on Native American boarding schools has been released in Michigan that details student abuses and government involvement in federal policy enforcement — findings include several schools in northern Michigan — and the report, costing over $1 million, has prompted an Attorney General investigation.  9&10 News
  • Gov. Whitmer outlined major changes to Michigan education on Wednesday — including mandatory literacy retraining and free preschool for under-4 children — as school leaders in Hillman and Traverse City evaluate the new funding and program impacts.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cherry Capital Airport opened a new $2.9 million parking lot with 369 spaces – just north of Costco on South Airport Road – to ease capacity issues as more than 400,000 travelers used the facility last year; a shuttle now takes passengers between the lot and the terminal in about 5 minutes while charging $4 less per day than standard rates.  9&10 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The former Macy’s building at Grand Traverse Mall is being converted into a multi-tenant retail center with five new businesses as construction crews white-box the interior. Township officials plan additional out-lot buildings, although no tenant move-in date has been set.  9&10 News
