- ➤ The Traverse City Planning Commission approved the Rotary Square design Tuesday night (after nearly 30 years of planning), moving the long-awaited downtown plaza closer to construction. The design features a natural turf lawn (with a wood slat canopy and river access) and now awaits City Commission approval on Mar. 9. 9&10 News
- ➤ After the Cadillac Farmer's Market ended due to a rate increase, the Downtown Development Authority hired Traverse City's non-profit SEEDS to run a new recurring market in downtown Cadillac — the event, held on Fridays, will support local vendors and community members. 9&10 News
- ➤ Northwestern Michigan College hosted a mobile food pantry on Monday for students and families in need in its main parking lot; another event will run on Monday, Mar. 16 offering drive-thru & walk-thru options. UpNorthLive

- ➤ Retired Marine Major General Michael Lehnert said rising tensions in the Middle East are causing delays in shipments at the Straits of Hormuz and may lead to higher fuel prices and fewer consumer goods available in our area. 9&10 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Early childhood educators in Northern Michigan — including Grand Traverse — have begun receiving monthly stipends from a $16M state program that pays up to $200 for part-time and $300 for full-time care providers, and the initiative will run through September. This effort aims to support local working families. 9&10 News
- ➤ Traverse City Area Public Schools is offering test-out exams for middle and high school students to earn graduation credit by scoring 78%. High school exams are May 6 at West Senior and May 9 at Central while middle school exams are April 21 (West Middle) and April 22 (East Middle). 9&10 News

- ➤ Retired National Guard Staff Sergeant Terry Richardson, who once served at Camp Grayling (in Crawford County), was awarded the Medal of Honor Monday at the White House for heroism during combat in Vietnam on Sept. 14. - ➤ Kuhn, a 22-year-old aerial skier from Boyne City, won an Olympic gold medal for Team USA in mixed aerials when her team landed six jumps nearly 30 points ahead. She credited her family’s support (and community) and will resume training after a brief break. 9&10 News
