COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vendor applications for East Bay Corners Farmers Market open March 16 online. The market will run every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the township office starting June 4 and offers food programs including the Power of Produce Club for kids (see township webpage for details).  9&10 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Traverse City company ATLAS Space Operations signed an agreement with the American Samoa Port Administration to build a satellite ground station that will fill a data gap in the South Pacific. The facility will support NOAA, the U.S. military and commercial remote sensing — creating temporary and permanent local jobs as construction completes in June.  9&10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NCMC students will soon have a clear path to a bachelor’s degree through Central Bound, a new partnership with Central Michigan University that offers coordinated advising and aligned coursework; the program is expanding with a $650K grant + support for smoother transfers.  UpNorthLive
  • TCAPS approved contracts for a new $17M indoor fieldhouse to support year-round sports and STEM programs. Construction will begin this spring on the TCAPS property next to East Middle School, with the facility projected to be ready for the 2027 school year.  UpNorthLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Supreme Court heard arguments Wednesday over Enbridge’s proposed tunnel project for the Line 5 oil pipeline. The court’s decision may affect future operations and environmental safety in the Great Lakes area, with parties noting that the tunnel would lower risks to natural resources.  9&10 News
  • The Leelanau Conservancy completed the Sugar Loaf property transfer on March 11 and will soon start restoring the 288-acre site by developing trails, a sledding hill, and a summit pavilion for public recreation.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mackinac Bridge Authority warns drivers about possible closures due to falling ice from freezing rain that coated the cables and towers. Authorities advise checking for updates from Mackinac County 911 (via its RAVE Alert System) as gusty winds may cause more ice to fall in the coming days.  UpNorthLive
  • The Downtown Development Authority plans to commission a study on rising rents in downtown Traverse City to help protect small, locally owned businesses. The study will review current conditions and best practices from other communities if approved in the upcoming budget.  9&10 News
  • Crews are installing a new traffic signal + pedestrian crosswalk along US-31 at the Traverse City State Park campground entrance this week as part of a multimillion-dollar project. The light will take about four weeks to install and the campground will reopen in April next year.  9&10 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Jennifer White at Brite White Dental now offers airway dentistry to treat sleep apnea by providing home sleep study kits and custom oral appliances, and new patients may schedule consultations today to improve sleep quality and prevent long term health issues.  9&10 News
