  • A Consumer Federation report (released Wed, Mar. 11) shows Michigan residents lost about $1.7 billion to online scams last year, averaging $170 per person in urban and rural areas. The report found Facebook and Instagram are frequent targets and urges tougher rules to protect residents.  9&10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kiwanis Club of Traverse City recognized student Grace McSparron, a senior at Traverse City West Senior High School, as Student of the Month on March 16. She earned honors for academics and athletics and plans to study physical therapy after earning her associate’s degree at NMC.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • With spring here, Michigan’s black bears have emerged from their dens and the DNR advises residents to secure food sources — like bird feeders, trash, and pet food — to avoid conflicts and habituation.
