- ➤ Joseph Hofer, 25, was arraigned on seven felony counts after he held a man and a woman at gunpoint on a nature trail in Garfield Township around 6 p.m. last Friday — he threatened one victim with a handgun and a knife, recovered a shotgun, rope, duct tape, a meat cleaver and over 800 condoms from his vehicle — and he will be sent to a locked mental health facility while awaiting his next court hearing. - ➤ A semi driver, Kulwaran Singh, 29, from Fresno, California, was charged with negligent homicide after he attempted to pass another truck and struck a pick-up truck in a fatal head-on collision on US 131 and E. Countyline Road in Wexford County Tuesday morning—Mancelona resident William Troy Bolin, 56, died and Singh was treated at Munson in Traverse City before being taken into custody on a $100,000 bond. - ➤ A new exhibit at Fort Michilimackinac—telling the story of slavery in the Straits and the life of Pompe—explores how indigenous and African American enslaved people worked in early local trade. - ➤ The Traverse City Commission approved Garfield Township’s plan to boost its water reserve capacity from 5 million to 6 million gallons per day at its March 17 meeting. The change helps the township keep usage below 80 percent during summer months as future permits follow the city’s bulk water agreement (which requires city approval for installations). 9&10 News
- ➤ Traverse City's Safe Harbor emergency shelter received a unanimous special land use permit approval at Tuesday night's planning commission meeting—this approval moves the shelter closer to year-round operation as it now heads to the city commission for a final vote with funds already committed by the city, county, and other organizations.
