COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Garland Street will remain closed to through traffic between Hall and Union streets until 5 p.m. Friday, Mar. 27 due to delayed contractor work near the new hotel development — the north sidewalk is closed and the south sidewalk stays open.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Falling ice has forced the Mackinac Bridge to remain closed for the second day as large sheets and spears of ice pose hazards for vehicles while crews monitor conditions and advise drivers to steer clear until it reopens.  UpNorthLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ollie's Bargain Outlet opened on March 18 at Grand Traverse Mall and offers up to 70% off brand-name merchandise. The store is expected to create local jobs (cashier and assistant manager positions) and accepts cash, major credit cards, and mobile payments.  9&10 News
  • Kitchen Choreography will move its design studio to a new mid-century modern space on 8th Street in April in the Oakwood District (near the Civic Center). Founders Mike and Angela Goodall said they will retain their historic Commons property for future plans.  9&10 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Traverse City Tourism reported that annual spending in the four-county area exceeded $1.14 billion at their meeting on Thursday afternoon at the City Opera House. Nearly 250 residents, officials and hospitality professionals attended the event.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Creekside School educator, Maranda Foster, was named Michigan Paraprofessional of the Year for her work with special needs students. She was honored at the MCEC conference on Feb. 26 (at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids), marking a key achievement in her six-year tenure.  9&10 News
  • Students from over 35 high schools began a weekend-long robotics competition in Traverse City on Friday morning; the contest tests their engineering skills, teamwork, and hands-on design work for real-world practice.  9&10 News
  • The Great Lakes Children's Museum will host spring break interactive STEM events at two sites from Mar. 27 to April 4; families can explore galactic adventures and maritime exhibits at Curiosity Place and its Satellite Site at the Grand Traverse Mall.  9&10 News
  • Northwest Education Services school psychologist Jim Corr was awarded the Presidential Award for Exceptional Service to Children and School Psychology by the National Association of School Psychologists. With 28 years of service — at Life Skills Center and New Horizons’ secondary programs — Corr said the honor reflects his commitment to students.  9&10 News

  • Traverse City Light and Power approved a new solar covered parking project with battery storage at its customer service center on Hall Street, with KEEN Technical Solutions set to install a 46.4 kW canopy, a 15-kWh battery, and a public display that shows live energy data for community sustainability.  UpNorthLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Transportation will host an open house Tuesday, Mar. 24 at Golden Fellowship Hall in Interlochen to discuss a $32.5 million project to rebuild 7.8 miles of US-31, with prep work starting on March 23 and main work beginning April 15.  9&10 News
  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has issued guidance urging residents to inspect storm-damaged trees safely before cleanup following recent winter storms. Property owners should avoid rapid chainsaw use and hire certified arborists if hazards like energized wires are discovered.  9&10 News

  • Manna Food Project received a $25,000 grant from the A.A. Van Elslander Foundation to buy produce, protein & dairy for its onsite pantry and mobile deliveries in Harbor Springs, serving vulnerable families, veterans and seniors in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.  9&10 News

  • Torch Lake — known for its clear turquoise waters and scenic beauty — was ranked among the top 15 trout fishing lakes for 2026 by FishingBooker, and anglers from across the area will soon plan spring trips on its waters.  9&10 News
