  • MARVAC 34th Northwest Michigan RV & Camping Show runs today through Sunday at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.   • The countdown to the 100th National Cherry Festival continues as daily features look back at its history and past celebrations. The first event was held May 22, 1925 and marked the Blessing of the Blossoms.  UpNorthLive

  • Traverse City teacher Kurstin Frank saved a talent show at Cherry Knoll Elementary when the music cut out by singing from the audience; her quick action kept the performance going as classmates joined in.  UpNorthLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says about 3,000 black bears will emerge from winter dens over the next few weeks and may wander into yards looking for food.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The EPA is working to remove leaking drums of calcium carbide from a backyard pole barn near Leland after Leelanau County and the state Department of Environment alerted officials two days ago. Inspectors found at least six drums (250 lbs each) on private property.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Traverse City Light and Power is building a solar canopy — complete with battery storage — at its Hall Street facility to show how renewable energy can reduce peak costs. The demonstration supports TCLP’s goal for 100% renewable energy by 2040 and will finish later this year.  9&10 News

  • East Bay Township officials plan to transform the US-31 corridor into a community destination that improves safety and access. The project will use new tax revenue for pedestrian crossings and a gathering spot at Mitchell Creek Inn over 20 years + partnerships and grants will support further improvements.  UpNorthLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ashley Ochoa, a Munson Healthcare coordinator, received the (Hometown Health Hero Award) for creating the Fuel for Recovery program to provide nutrient-dense meals and grocery help for cancer patients during long infusion sessions at Cowell Family Cancer Center. Her work now informs statewide efforts to fight food insecurity.  9&10 News
  • UpNorthLive will host its 15th blood drive with Versiti Blood Center from Thursday, May 14 from 12 to 5:30 p.m. at UpNorthLive Studio (8513 East Traverse Highway on M-72 West) to help meet local blood needs.  UpNorthLive
