ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says about 3,000 black bears will emerge from winter dens over the next few weeks and may wander into yards looking for food. Traverse City Record-Eagle
- ➤ The EPA is working to remove leaking drums of calcium carbide from a backyard pole barn near Leland after Leelanau County and the state Department of Environment alerted officials two days ago. Inspectors found at least six drums (250 lbs each) on private property. Traverse City Record-Eagle
- ➤ Traverse City Light and Power is building a solar canopy — complete with battery storage — at its Hall Street facility to show how renewable energy can reduce peak costs. The demonstration supports TCLP’s goal for 100% renewable energy by 2040 and will finish later this year. 9&10 News

- ➤ East Bay Township officials plan to transform the US-31 corridor into a community destination that improves safety and access. - ➤ Ashley Ochoa, a Munson Healthcare coordinator, received the (Hometown Health Hero Award) for creating the Fuel for Recovery program to provide nutrient-dense meals and grocery help for cancer patients during long infusion sessions at Cowell Family Cancer Center.
