COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation awarded $36,886 to support equity and inclusion efforts in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties — as well as among the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The new endowment and Diversity Equity Inclusion fund split the money among 21 organizations.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CRIME NEWS

  • Traverse City police pulled over a car near 12th and Division just before 1 p.m. on Saturday and are asking charges for possession of methamphetamine and heroin and driving under the influence after three knives and drugs were found in the vehicle.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Author Jennifer Weiner will speak at the City Opera House on April 9th & discuss her latest novel The Griffin Sisters Greatest Hits, which is described as humorous and heartfelt in its look at friendship and sisterhood.  9&10 News
  • The Northwest Michigan Ballet Theatre will present The Sleeping Beauty at Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center on April 5 and April 6—featuring young dancers performing solos and duets to Tchaikovsky's music. This beautifully choreographed ballet offers a fresh take on the classic story for audiences in Traverse City.  9&10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northwest Education Services will launch a heavy equipment/diesel mechanics program for high school juniors and seniors in the fall. The board approved the program on March 4 and it will train students in heavy equipment + diesel-fueled machinery mechanics.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Antrim County emergency services and utility crews cleared fallen trees and debris from Pineview Drive — restoring power and access as residents deal with storm damage. Warming shelters are available at local centers for those in need of warmth, phone charging, and meals.  9&10 News
  • Hundreds of utility crews worked to restore power after a weekend ice storm left nearly 83,000 customers without electricity — 40,000 from Consumers Energy and more than 43,000 from Great Lakes Energy were still without power as of Monday.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Traverse County board members will consider a proposal at Wednesday morning’s meeting to replace the 61-year-old jail with a new criminal justice complex on LaFranier Road at a projected cost of $50 to $60 million — a move that continues a long-running debate over the county’s corrections facilities.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
