COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Traverse City residents will share their views on running Safe Harbor as a year-round emergency shelter at a public hearing on May 5. If the land use permit passes and the city commission approves it, the city will enforce a camping ban at The Pines with an enforcement date to be announced next week.  UpNorthLive

CRIME NEWS

  • The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office arrested two men for home invasions in Fife Lake and Paradise Townships on April 4 and recovered stolen firearms and property, with a 37-year-old man taken for a break-in in Fife Lake and a 24-year-old man arrested after a home invasion in Paradise Township—both are in custody—while the investigation continues.  9&10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education study session was canceled Monday night due to a trustee emergency. The district said it will reschedule the meeting and announce the new date later.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan residents are advised to secure food and remove bird feeders as bear sightings increase in the northern Lower Peninsula and Traverse City area this spring. The Department of Natural Resources said keeping food off property and making loud noises—such as banging metal pots—can help encourage bears to move on.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Traverse City commissioners approved a pilot agreement for a new workforce housing complex on Lot-O (the parking lot near the Omelette Shoppe at State and Cass) Monday night. The project will have 44 residential units (with monthly rents ranging from $430 to $1,500) and construction will begin next year with an opening planned for 2028.  UpNorthLive
  • Traverse City commissioners postponed a decision on proposed zoning changes for the R-2 mixed-density district—proposing to allow up to four dwelling units per lot instead of two—after discussing the design standards at Monday’s meeting. Mayor Amy Shamroe said there is no timeline to revisit the amendment.  UpNorthLive
  • Contractors for MDOT will begin detour route improvements on local roads and install temporary traffic signals on April 14 to manage traffic for the US-31 rebuilding project in Benzie and Grand Traverse counties. The project will widen routes and add safety features and is expected to support 310 jobs as work continues until Aug. 29.  9&10 News
