  • Animal shelters across the region are featuring adoptable dogs and cats for potential new pet owners at locations in Manistee, Lake City, Grayling, Leelanau, Traverse City, and Harbor Springs. Two upcoming events (Bark Crawl on April 25 from 5 to 10 p.m. and the 11th Annual Wine for Whiskers on April 27 from 12 to 5 p.m.) will raise funds for local humane programs.  UpNorthLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Traverse County IT worker Chemoy Jarrett (36) was arraigned Friday on a sexual assault charge after a court employee said he touched her inappropriately during a hug; he was released on a $15,000 personal recognizance bond and will return for a preliminary exam on May 1.  UpNorthLive

  • Grand Rapids singer and keyboardist Hannah Laine will perform a full-band show at The Alluvion in Traverse City on May 23 to promote her new solo EP Unfolding; the concert will feature a nine-piece band (including a string quartet) that finishes her Michigan tour which began earlier this month.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Traverse City Area Public Schools held ribbon cutting ceremonies Thursday to open new innovation centers at Traverse City West Senior and Central High Schools—offering modern equipment for computer programming, construction, manufacturing and design to support robotics teams and boost STEM skills.  UpNorthLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources warned that high fire risk will affect northern Michigan this weekend due to warm, dry conditions — they urged residents to postpone burning or follow safe practices — and said 17 public debris disposal sites are now open after a recent ice storm downed trees. They advised that anyone burning should keep water and tools ready to quickly control flames if needed.  UpNorthLive

  • Thousands of homes remain without power nearly two weeks after the ice storm, and electric crews continue rebuilding lines and replacing poles. Governor Whitmer declared a state of emergency on March 30th in 10 counties, and companies plan to restore most power by Sunday and Monday + crews are focusing on remote areas with storm damage.  UpNorthLive
