COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Torchport Airpark is paving its runway to improve safety for pilots. The work transforms the airpark near Kewadin into a fly-in community with private and commercial homes, and the new runway is expected to be finished before the Memorial Day weekend fly-in event.  UpNorthLive
  • Today, the Evergreen Community Group hosts a Spring Fundraiser and Community Garage Sale at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 6726 Center Road, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—a pancake breakfast is served until noon. Community members can drop off gently used items on Friday, April 25 at the drive-through donation drop-off, and unsold items will be donated to Samaritan’s Closet.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Renowned air show performer Rob Holland died in an accident at Langley AFB on April 24 — he was scheduled to perform at the National Cherry Festival Air Show and the festival offered condolences to his family and fellow aviators.  9&10 News

  • Interlochen Public Radio launched a new daily podcast called Intermezzo—hosted by Christy L’Esperance with rotating young co-hosts—that debuted on April 21 to spark youth interest in classical music by exploring topics like humor, feelings, and the science of sound.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The Dennos Museum Center is hosting a screening of 'Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer's' as part of its PBS Indie Lens Pop-Up series—adding a film event to its celebrated art programs in Traverse City.   • Traverse City will host its 4th annual Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration on May 13 at the Dennos Museum Center, where free light bites are served at 5 p.m. — a conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Taro Yamasaki, moderated by Sakura Takano, begins at 6 p.m. — as local AAPI-owned restaurants participate in the event.  9&10 News

  • Traverse City middle school robotics teams won state awards last month after competing in the Michigan Middle School VEX IQ Robotics Championship in Monroe on March 8. Team Lockdown + Wings of Woodland earned top honors with local coaches guiding each team.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Traverse City officials discussed new vote requirements for tax increment finance plans & the implementation of two voter-adopted charter amendments. City commissioners heard criticism of the draft policy on Monday and will work further on revised guidelines.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
