  • The Record-Eagle will switch from carrier home delivery to U.S. Postal Service delivery by June 1 to improve newspaper service & meet readers' needs.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • After floodwaters receded, Traverse City residents and officials assessed damage to homes, roads & public spaces. Some neighborhoods face cleanup tasks while repair plans are being made.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • A $5M restoration project for two historic dairy barns is underway in a space once central to the former hospital. The renovations include a new roof and expanded education and event areas for the Botanic Garden’s center, plus a connecting tower that blends preservation with new roles.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials monitoring water levels said Friday that flooding at Cheboygan Dam receded enough to lift the structure from the 'Ready, Set, Go' evacuation protocol — part of a series of near-misses at aging dams across northern Michigan that could lead to new safety regulations for over 2,000 dams statewide.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City contractors will close the 200 block of Garland Street between Hall Street and N. Union Street on Monday, May 4 for the day. The north sidewalk will be closed while the south remains open—call 231—922—4467 for details.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • City officials will soon review a plan to build a new farmers market that would offer a venue for local growers and vendors — the council may vote on the proposal soon. The project aims to boost local food and small business opportunities.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dan Nielsen, a former Record-Eagle business editor, warns that Michigan’s beaches may pose drowning risks this summer (over 1,400 drownings occurred in the Great Lakes between 2010 and 2025) and advises residents to learn proper swimming skills before venturing into the water.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
