COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nine northern Michigan credit unions have launched a $500 micro-grant program for members affected by the spring flooding — the Northern Michigan Flood Relief Fund pools resources from thirteen counties to help those in need.  9&10 News
  • Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes added solar panels to its track chair trailer to boost trail access for users. Reservations are open now for the program set to run daily from May 22 to Oct. 11 (excluding July 4).  UpNorthLive
  • Trek for Vets is underway in Traverse City—a 500-mile, 25-day journey to raise veteran awareness. It began with a flight from St. Ignace and a boat ride from Mackinac Island to Mackinaw City and will end at Royal Oak during the Memorial Day Parade on May 25.  UpNorthLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Traverse City Uncorked invites wine lovers to join a self-guided tour from May 1 to May 10 by downloading a digital passport that lists participating spots; bigLITTLE wines — run by two brothers — is one spot and will host summer events with live music and food trucks.  UpNorthLive
  • City Manager Benjamin Marentette is negotiating a lease for the former Bijou by the Bay building as Brian Chamberlain and partners propose live theater & comedy shows along with all-ages events in Clinch Park to revitalize the space.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Traverse City Area Public Schools broke ground on a $17.2 million afterschool clubhouse and multipurpose fieldhouse next to East Middle School on Tuesday, starting a decade-long project with local community partners.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Voters approved funding for Charlevoix-Emmet ISD (including an $8.2 million bond for career and technical education) and for Public Schools of Petoskey last Tuesday. The funds will support over 50 programs and upgrades such as new collision repair courses and playground improvements.  9&10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Grand Traverse Conservation District is hosting habitat restoration events through May, starting today with a beginner’s foraging walk at East Creek Reserve, then a community bioblitz on May 8 and a native plant sale on Boardman River Nature Center; fees apply for some events.  9&10 News
  • Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy released updated wake sport guidelines on May 6 to protect Walloon Lake. The recommendations advise wake boats to use water deeper than 20 feet and stay 500 feet from shorelines + they are based on recent scientific research.  9&10 News

  • Condominium associations are advised to review budgeting, inspections, and insurance coverage to prepare for flooding and severe weather this spring; attorney Amanda J.
