- ➤ Hip hop star Ludacris will close the final night of the National Cherry Festival with a concert on Saturday, July 11 at the Pepsi Bayside Music Stage. Ticket sales begin tomorrow, May 15, with prices starting at $68. Traverse City Record-Eagle
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ New data from Traverse Connect shows that in the past five years, private jobs in Grand Traverse County increased by more than 12,700 (a 25% rise) and population grew by 5.6% far above the state average. Projections expect more growth through 2035 as county officials assess housing and infrastructure readiness. 9&10 News
- ➤ Northern Michigan's jobless rate in the Traverse City area was 4.6% in March — slightly lower than February’s 4.7% and down from 5.5% last March. Traverse City Record-Eagle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Traverse City Coast Guard Auxiliary offers an 8-hour boater safety course for participants aged 12 and above to earn a certificate and learn navigation skills. Ticket sales for the May 16 session have closed, and a June course will soon open for registration (coaches stress the life jacket requirement). UpNorthLive
- ➤ Traverse City Area Public Schools was selected as a 2026 Education Excellence Award Winner as SET SEG Foundation awarded a $2,500 grant for its free Student Support Network program (helping students overcome learning obstacles). Traverse City Record-Eagle
- ➤ Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education approved $59,398 for the Gone Boarding program, a project-based curriculum that uses skateboards + longboards, surfboards, and snowboards for high schoolers. - ➤ The Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education approved a resolution on Monday to raise awareness and empower teen parents by implementing strategies to prevent teen pregnancy + help them overcome education challenges. - ➤ Traverse City Area Public Schools achieved full Michigan Green Schools certification for the 2025-2026 school year. Every building earned an environmental stewardship designation, making TCAPS one of only two districts to reach this milestone. 9&10 News

- ➤ Registration is open for the 2-mile Swim for Grand Traverse Bay on Aug. 8, from Greilickville Harbor Park to Volleyball Beach to benefit Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay & water protection. An open house is set for May 20 from 4-6 p.m. at Discovery Pier aboard the tall ship Manitou. 9&10 News

- ➤ Officials say flood damage from last month has exceeded $15 million and could climb to $19.5 million to trigger a federal emergency declaration. County crews have registered over 200 repair sites & state & FEMA teams are arriving today to assess 30 to 40 homes with no injuries reported. 9&10 News

- ➤ Munson Healthcare earned A grades from the Leapfrog Group for quality and safety at Munson Medical Center and its hospitals, as announced May 6 — this achievement places it in Michigan’s top quartile and adds to the Healthcare Team Week celebration.
