COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Grade School will let the public view the building before its next transformation; a sale of surplus items (including unclaimed student art) is planned for July with details to be announced.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Bellaire and East Jordan Family Health Centers installed custom flag retirement boxes built by welding students at their middle/high school. The project—led by instructor Dave Muladore and supported by Toby Prevo Residential Services—offers a way to retire worn flags properly to honor veterans and youth in northern Michigan.  9&10 News
  • TART Trails + the Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association broke ground on the Vasa TimBarn to build a facility for year-round trail maintenance on the Vasa Trail network.   • Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7731 launched a million-dollar campaign to improve its historic hall with an elevator, covered entrance and updated wiring — a project to make events accessible; the post will host a Memorial Day ceremony Monday at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park at the Leelanau Government Center.  UpNorthLive

  • 9&10 News was honored on May 16 in Detroit by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for receiving seven awards in news, commercials, and digital storytelling (including its ice storm coverage and veteran feature) while also earning four Emmy nominations.  9&10 News

  • Today, a temporary traffic light will be installed at Hartman Road and U.S. 31 — the move aims to improve safety at the intersection as local officials monitor traffic.  UpNorthLive
  • Dan Besson, fire chief of Leland Township Fire and Rescue, has been named Michigan Fire Chief of the Year by the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs. He is recognized for his 30 years of service and his efforts in training future emergency responders.  UpNorthLive

  • Traverse City's Pit Spitters announced their 2026 coaching staff on May 18 with field manager Todd Reid returning for his eighth season—assistant coaches Ryan Gillings, Mason Hill and Aaron Forrest added. The team will open at home on May 27 against the Rockford Rivets.  9&10 News
