COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After frosty conditions slowed early growth, Northern Michigan farmers began harvesting asparagus on May 16. The annual Asparagus Festival in Empire is set for Saturday, June 6 (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) with food vendors and live music.  UpNorthLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, a plane crashed on North Fox Island in Lake Michigan and Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City rescued two survivors, who were brought to the city in stable condition before temperatures dropped further.  9&10 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Northern Michigan cherry growers are monitoring frost risks as cooler temperatures may threaten bloom and fruit set. They are using wind machines to mix warmer air (a strategy to minimize damage) and will evaluate their crop potential in a few weeks.  UpNorthLive
  • Duncan L. Clinch Marina is entering Memorial Day weekend with marine fuel prices $1.50 higher than last season, according to harbormaster Shane Dilloway. The marina receives fuel 2 to 3 times per week from Blarney Castle and has seen a slow start in demand due to lingering cold weather.  9&10 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reports Michigan drivers face higher gas prices at $4.77 per gallon as they prepare for Memorial Day weekend road trips. Over 1.2 million residents are expected to travel, but elevated pump prices may slow travel and impact local businesses.  UpNorthLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Grade School hosted a community tour of its historic building yesterday before planned renovations begin. The school (established in 1874) will upgrade Lars Auditorium and the gym while preserving original features for future use.  UpNorthLive
  • Coast Guard Auxiliary today reminds boaters to wear life jackets, file a float plan, and check wind and water conditions before heading out. The group offers free safety inspections and will host a paddle safety course on June 26 in Traverse City (registration required).  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy Sheriff Matt McKinley earned the U.S. Justice Department's Hometown Hero Award today at Benzie Central High School for helping underprivileged students with his McKinley's Kids program. He is one of only 93 recipients nationwide and one of two honorees in Michigan.  9&10 News
  • Grand Traverse County Road Commission warned drivers yesterday to avoid Garfield Avenue between Hammond Road and South Airport Road after a failed water main caused a washout + lane closures.  9&10 News
