COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Traverse City resident Peg Jonkhoff was named the Zonta Club’s 2026 Outstanding Woman Leader during the Hats Off to Women lunch held this month, recognizing her service to the Grand Traverse community.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Two local recreation businesses, Hoxeyville Outfitters and Pine River Paddlesports Center, use chainsaws and a new rope repelling method to clear Pine River and keep it safe for paddlers. Their work is highlighted in viral social media videos and will continue through summer due to heavy flooding earlier this year.  9&10 News
  • Traverse City's northbound lane at 130 Hall Street parking lot will be closed Thursday, May 28, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for underground fiber installation along Hall Street (BATA bus stops will be temporarily relocated).  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Central United Methodist Church is remodeling its campus with a $4.2 million project that will add an elevator, accessible restroom and updated sanctuary — services now move to Sunset Park at 9 a.m. and Traverse Bay Sanctuary at 11 a.m., with construction finishing by the end of the year.  UpNorthLive

  • The 2026 Interlochen Arts Festival added Yacht Rock the Dock featuring Ambrosia, John Ford Coley, Peter Beckett, and Elliot Lurie. The performance runs at 7:30 p.m. July 20 (tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. May 25).  9&10 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate faced a dried cherry shortage this spring when owner Jody Hayden learned that her longtime supplier said none would be available for the rest of the season.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifty-two Kingsley High Navy JROTC cadets from Grand Traverse County marched in Washington, D.C.'s 250th Memorial Day Parade and toured landmarks including the Pentagon, White House and Arlington National Cemetery, earning praise for their discipline and professionalism.  UpNorthLive
  • Minna Danziger from Leland advanced to the second round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC Tuesday morning after winning the Record-Eagle regional bee in March. She competed at DAR Constitution Hall with hopes of winning the Scripps Cup and a $50,000 cash prize.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 'No Mow May' program has encouraged yards to remain unmowed to help pollinators, with over 1,000 signs distributed in its first two years. This year the campaign paused to gauge community response and remind residents to support native plants (the Garden's Executive Director explained).  UpNorthLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City crews began traffic signal work (at the intersections of Hannah Ave and Carver St) on Woodmere Avenue on Tuesday, May 26 and the work will finish by Friday, May 29; motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to use alternate routes to avoid brief lane closures.  9&10 News
  • Garfield Township will soon offer a new tax break and set up a committee to review housing incentive applications. However, a Grand Traverse County policy may limit projects for tenants with incomes above a specific threshold.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Wheels on Rails in Traverse City is debuting new upgrades— a pedal bike assist motor and expanded group rides— that will run until Oct. 17. The family-friendly rail biking experience, founded by Macie Keffer, aims to welcome riders of all abilities.  9&10 News
