  • Traverse City-born Mike Morhardt moved back to his hometown in 2017 with his wife to open Loco Boys Brewing Co., a brewpub with an open view design that lets guests watch the brewing process+ he built the concept after drawing inspiration from Santa Monica Brew Works in California.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians celebrated 45 years of federal recognition in Peshawbestown — marking a milestone that followed decades of petitions and treaty challenges which led to their formal recognition in 1980.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northwestern Michigan College launched a new try-it-out program to help adult learners by matching students with navigators—this program aims to help 2,000 northern Michiganders earn post-graduate degrees or certifications in the next three years. The college received $1.19M in state grants to fund the NoMI Attainment Collaborative that partners with over 20 local organizations.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Natural Resources warned that fire risk was high in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula and urged residents to take care with campfires and burning yard debris today into Monday — check online for burn permits, keep a hose nearby, and burn only natural materials — to help prevent sparks.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The Antrim Conservation District at 4820 Stover Road will host two days of free soil science events starting June 6—on that day, three sessions will cover biochar, home composting and soil health under the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program, while June 7 will feature a full-day presentation on microbiome science with free gardening supplies offered at lunch.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Alan and Fran Jones of Greenrock Farm—owners of this non-certified organic farm—unexpectedly grew two acres of radishes while cutting back on time-consuming potatoes and tomatoes, and they will turn the bare fields into a wildflower meadow by next spring—ordering seeds in smaller packs when larger packs sold out.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
