  • Smart Commute Week began Monday in Traverse City with free breakfast at North Peak Brewing from 7 a.m.+9 a.m., as the event promotes walking+biking, carpooling and bonus point events for grand prizes scheduled Friday.  UpNorthLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Huron Tackle in Traverse City signed the 100% Great Lakes Fish Pledge to repurpose fish waste from cleaning stations and create local jobs — the company is the 39th to join the international effort and will convert byproducts into compost, pet food, and other products to support sustainable practices.  9&10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kingsley High School junior Anna Bauer was chosen as the only Michigan cadet among 10 for the prestigious Commander Naval Air Forces Flight Academy program and will train for eight weeks this summer to earn five college credits and a private pilot’s license at no cost.   • Governor Whitmer signed a bill Monday, June 2 that forgives school days lost during the March 30 ice storm—this law gives northern Michigan schools extra time to meet required class hours while easing financial burdens from the power outages and damage.  UpNorthLive
  • Wexford-Missaukee ISD, in partnership with Heritage Broadcasting, finalized a purchase agreement for the Cadillac 9&10 News building to support its growing classroom needs. The 22,000-square-foot facility, with more than $1.5 million in renovations, will help the district free up campus space for student services.  9&10 News

  • Don Balcom, 90, must move or sell the barge that sank in Grand Traverse Bay five years ago after pleading guilty to a water law violation, and he has until June 27 to comply. Buyers with money down plan to close the deal in two weeks + Balcom said he hopes to end the long saga and focus on his family and health.  UpNorthLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Lakes Community Mental Health Authority has reduced after-hours support for its FAST team that helps children in crisis as part of cost containment measures. The FAST team now works Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—while the 24/7 crisis hotline remains available and a new crisis center will open 24/7 in July.  UpNorthLive
