Good morning, Traverse City. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 5th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cherryland Humane Society is expanding its facility by adding 9,000 square feet to ease overcrowding for animals—cats moved between dog kennels and animal control will get more space, and a new community training center will be included, thanks to generous donations. This expansion will provide a longer-term solution for the shelter’s capacity challenges.  UpNorthLive
  • Taylor Moore from Food Rescue said food pantry use went up 41% last year while the food supplied increased only 2%, and local agencies worry that SNAP funding cuts could worsen hunger. Patty Steele at the Traverse City Salvation Army and other community leaders noted that over 14,000 people got food help in April—raising concerns that even generous donations might not meet the increasing need.  UpNorthLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kingsley woman broke into a Blair Township home Tuesday morning and took several items before state police tracked her through thick vegetation on a five-mile pursuit using K-9 Ox—she was arrested and taken to Grand Traverse County jail.  9&10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sleeping Bear Dunes park rangers invite the first 40 volunteers to join a cleanup project on National Trails Day Saturday. Volunteers will meet at the Shauger Hill Trailhead at 9:00 a.m.—they will open sandbags, spread sand, and remove trash along Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive's Lake Michigan while receiving free National Lakeshore entry.  UpNorthLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential expanded the MI Tri-Share Child Care Program so that Traverse City families with participating employers can now benefit from a plan covering two-thirds of the cost, with eligibility raised from 325 to 400 percent of the federal poverty level as of May 1 (about $128,600 for a family of four).  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Traverse City commissioners approved the $42 million budget for next fiscal year — following the charter’s deadline of the first Monday in June. City manager Liz Vogel said the new budget will add staff for water, the marina and IT — and it will also launch the EMS transport and support key parts of the five-year strategic plan.  9&10 News
  • Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson promoted her new book The Purposeful Warrior at the National Writers Series in Traverse City on June 4th—while Representative James DeSana introduced Articles of Impeachment against her. Benson focused on her work ensuring every vote is counted and did not address the impeachment during her talk.  UpNorthLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan has released an updated Eat Safe Fish guide that now warns anglers not to eat certain fish from Northern lakes because the state lowered safe PFAS limits—bluegill, sunfish and rock bass are among those at risk. Anglers are urged to check the guide for safe eating details since even small amounts of these chemicals can hurt health—possibly causing thyroid damage and other long-term issues.  9&10 News
