COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cedar/Maple City Lions Club is hosting a Propane Sale Fundraiser on June 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cherry Propane, 4200 E. Traverse Hwy next to Cherry Capital Equipment—propane prices range from $8 for an 11 lb. container to $33 for a 60 lb. container.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Today, the City Streets Division will close Cass Street between Front Street and State Street for asphalt repairs that will continue into tomorrow (drivers should use alternate routes to avoid congestion and delays).  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Northwestern Michigan College will host Juneteenth celebrations on June 19 from 3 to 10 p.m.—the event will feature a special screening, youth activities, community gatherings, and speakers highlighting civil rights.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Traverse City Area Public Schools music coordinator and choral educator Wendee Wolf-Schlarf is retiring after 38 years of teaching—21 years as the district’s music coordinator. She will end her teaching career at the close of the academic year to focus on other areas of her life.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Harper, a golden retriever therapy dog, visits Traverse City East Middle School each week—spreading unconditional love and lifting the spirits of students and staff. School officials say the visits help everyone forget daily worries—bringing bright moments into the school day.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Darrell Lavender was named CEO of Grand Traverse Pavilions on today following a formal vote by the GTC Department of Health and Human Services board—he will lead the county-owned senior care facility on the Grand Traverse Commons grounds.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Traverse City officials and experts looked into who will pay to fix aging dams, and the report shows the issue is complicated as repair costs continue to rise. Discussions on shifting funding responsibility among local, state, and federal agencies will continue as more details emerge.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Over 800 posts were published on the Traverse City Homes and Apartments Facebook group in the last month and most were fake listings meant to mislead renters during a time when affordable housing is in high demand—Traverse City Planning Director Shawn Winter said the shortage remains critical.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
