COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Leelanau Historical Society will host a cemetery preservation workshop from June 20th through June 22nd at Maple Grove Cemetery near Sutton's Bay—volunteers will learn gentle cleaning techniques for gravestones, including those over 150 years old.  UpNorthLive
  • The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office advises water users to let someone know their plans and keep accessible life jackets on board+ Sergeant Ben McManus also stressed drinking on boats in moderation and having a buddy nearby while swimming to help prevent accidents.  9&10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Traverse Area District Library kicked off its Summer Reading Club on June 16th when families visited stations hosted by groups such as the Girl Scouts and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library—an event aimed at helping children keep up their reading skills over the summer. Library officials stressed that maintaining reading habits through the break is key to preserving gains made during the school year.  9&10 News
  • Traverse City Area Public Schools leaders chose five strategic goals in a Monday study session that focused on academic performance, behavior issues, child well-being and safety, staff retention and recruitment, and expanding post-secondary options. These goals will guide the school system’s priorities for the next three years.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Transportation will shift traffic onto newly rebuilt lanes on the bay side of the M-72/M-22 project late this week—crews will finish paving and markings tomorrow and the $26 million rebuild is expected to complete in the fall while a new trail becomes accessible for pedestrians and bicycles.  UpNorthLive
  • 3 Mile Road is closed for construction as workers add turn lanes and smooth the bumpy road using a special fabric on swampy ground & detour signs tell drivers to use Garfield Road and 4 Mile Road. The work began earlier this month and is expected to end in August.  9&10 News
  • On June 16th, the Traverse City City Commission approved 13 new full-time positions for the 2025-2026 budget, including six firefighter roles that will begin EMS transport services. Commissioner Tim Werner voted no — saying more discussion was needed on hires beyond firefighters.  9&10 News
  • Traverse City commissioners signed an agreement with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, the DNR, and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission—defining roles for operating and maintaining a new FishPass in the city. The plan gives Traverse City ownership and dam safety responsibilities while the commission runs research and the DNR enforces fishing rules, and the agreement will last ten years after FishPass construction is completed in 2027.  UpNorthLive
  • The Traverse City Commission voted 6-1 to join partners with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Grand Traverse Band and Michigan Department of Natural Resources to run the Fish Pass on the Boardman-Ottaway River for 10 years after it is finished in 2026—city funds of $27,000 yearly and state funds totaling $1,900,000 will support operations, park access, and dam repairs with an option to renew the agreement yearly after the period ends.  9&10 News
