More than 100 people protested Saturday morning along M-37 near the facility run by the GEO Group in Lake County over the planned immigration processing center reopening, which will accept detainees today.

Local and regional residents said the protest shows their opposition to what they see as exploitation of immigration for profit—criticism aimed at the company’s business practices.

A 47-year-old Lewiston man died when he was hit by a car while crossing U.S. 31 just after midnight Sunday between Three and Four Mile roads— the driver, a 33-year-old from Traverse City, was heading east, according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.

On Saturday, protesters lined M-37 in Baldwin—raising signs, pumping fists, and chanting slogans—to oppose the operation of the North Lake Correctional Facility.
