COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Record-Eagle and other print media will include small brown paper bags from the Child and Family Services program to bring foster children and families together—residents can also pick one up at local Olesons and Oryana stores as the campaign begins this month.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Last weekend, jets and planes flipped, dove, and soared above West Traverse Bay at the Cherry Festival Air Shows, where military and civilian performers launched flares and sent waves of rumbling through the crowds. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Farmers across Northern Michigan may soon use solar panels to power their farms as well as grow crops. Michigan State University is testing panels with apple orchards in Oceana County and will expand its study to see if there is enough power, if fruit trees grow well, and if the cost is worth it—while Lakeview Hill Farm in Grand Traverse County already saves money with its panels.  UpNorthLive
  • Officials are testing 21 area beaches each week as part of a summer E. coli monitoring program run by the Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay and local health departments — Jack Nowland will take water samples from East Bay Park on Wednesday morning to check bacteria levels.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Garfield Township planner John Sych said officials are considering a corridor plan for South Airport Road between Cass Road and Park Drive where traffic reaches more than 50,000 vehicles a day—though the plan is not expected to completely solve congestion.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The Michigan Department of Transportation will close lanes at the intersection of M-22 and Cherry Bend Road today and tomorrow for underground utility work — including pavement rebuilding. The project will rebuild more than two miles of Grandview Parkway in Traverse City and Elmwood Township and is set to fully reopen in late October with final completion on November 15.  UpNorthLive
  • County officials and Housing North representatives unveiled a new digitized county zoning atlas at an open house at West Shore Bank in Traverse City—over 50 residents learned the details of allowed housing projects mapped for 16 local municipalities.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
