Good morning, Traverse City. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 8th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cherryland Humane Society achieved no-kill status in 2024 by saving over 90% of the dogs and cats that entered its shelter, according to Best Friends Animal Society’s report (community support was key). The nonprofit credits local families, businesses, and organizations with helping it find permanent homes for many animals in Northern Michigan.  9&10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Natural Resources said that a clogged vacuum caused sewage, trash, and feces to spill outside an outhouse at Silver Lake access site and cleanup was completed Monday—officials will monitor the area to ensure rules are followed.  UpNorthLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge ruled that Peninsula Township’s zoning ordinances violated the wineries’ free speech rights—forcing the township to pay millions in damages to 11 wineries on Old Mission Peninsula. The ruling found that the ordinances compelled the wineries to promote local agriculture and restricted their branded merchandise.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The Keith J. Charters State Park Campground in Traverse City closed for the rest of the 2025 camping season as the Department of Natural Resources began its $8.5 million enhancement project to improve visitor access, camping amenities, and traffic flow by redesigning the entrance and installing a new traffic signal — replacing a pedestrian bridge in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Transportation. The Lake Michigan shoreline day-use area remains open, though it may close briefly for intersection work, and the campground will reopen for the 2026 season.  UpNorthLive
