- ➤ Cherryland Humane Society achieved no-kill status in 2024 by saving over 90% of the dogs and cats that entered its shelter, according to Best Friends Animal Society’s report (community support was key). - ➤ A federal judge ruled that Peninsula Township’s zoning ordinances violated the wineries’ free speech rights—forcing the township to pay millions in damages to 11 wineries on Old Mission Peninsula. - ➤ The Keith J. Charters State Park Campground in Traverse City closed for the rest of the 2025 camping season as the Department of Natural Resources began its $8.5 million enhancement project to improve visitor access, camping amenities, and traffic flow by redesigning the entrance and installing a new traffic signal — replacing a pedestrian bridge in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Transportation. The Lake Michigan shoreline day-use area remains open, though it may close briefly for intersection work, and the campground will reopen for the 2026 season. UpNorthLive
