EDUCATION NEWS

  • A federal decision to pause over $5.6 million in Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers funds has put Northern Michigan after-school and summer programs at risk for the upcoming school year, affecting more than 500 rural students and disrupting ongoing summer sessions at SEEDS EcoSchool—future funding will also be cut.  9&10 News

  • Farmers, scientists and policymakers will gather tomorrow at Eckerle Farm in Suttons Bay+to warn that extreme weather fueled by climate change threatens Michigan's iconic cherry industry and rural economies+and they will present testimony on crop loss, rising insurance costs and the need for climate resilience measures.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal Judge Paul Maloney ruled that Peninsula Township’s zoning ordinances violated the rights of 11 wineries on Old Mission Peninsula by forcing them to adopt strict marketing rules—resulting in a $49M damages award. The ruling means the township must pay the wineries the awarded damages.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Michigan hospitals are warning that Medicaid cuts of $6 billion over the next 10 years may force them to cut services to patients. Hospital leaders say rural clinics might face closures or staff shortages + plan for reduced services if the cuts fully take effect.  9&10 News
  • Michigan medical experts urged parents to vaccinate their children after 18 measles cases were recorded this year, including 4 in Grand Traverse County—health officials reported nearly 1,300 cases confirmed nationwide over the past six months, with local vaccination rates below the recommended 90%.  9&10 News
