COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday morning, Traverse City residents gathered at Oakwood Cemetery to dedicate the long-unmarked grave of a Civil War veteran on the 112th anniversary of his death. Participants in period attire, including two women in 1800s-era black gowns and veils, honored his service and remembered his legacy.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • A panel on freshwater innovation was held Tuesday night at the City Opera House in Traverse City where BlueTech and AquaAction shared plans to keep our water clean and safe. CRIME NEWS

  • A 17-year-old Traverse City teen pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of 1st degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in May—bond was continued as the case moves to 13th Circuit Court.  UpNorthLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Northport Art and Craft Show will take place July 19-20 at Haserot Park along Grand Traverse Bay, where local and national artists will display original, handcrafted works. Blue Ribbon Events will host the juried event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and visitors who donate nonperishable food (for local food banks) will be entered into a drawing for $50 in Blue Ribbon Bucks.  9&10 News
  • Traverse City's Music House Museum features over 100-year-old automated instruments from the late 1800s to the 1920s on a 90-minute tour. The museum also offers concerts and silent movies—events that highlight reproducing pianos admired by Executive Director Tim Keaton, and kids are welcome.  9&10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Traverse City Area Public Schools approved a $650000 contract to have TMP Architects draft designs for a proposed athletic fieldhouse — the project will create a large indoor sports complex for school teams and community events. The school board voted five to two on Monday — confirming plans for design work.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a special meeting on July 14, Peninsula Township officials voted 6-0 to appeal a $50 million ruling over 2017 rules that limited wineries on Old Mission Peninsula. Supervisor Maura Sanders said officials plan to meet with the wineries and check if their insurance may cover part of the cost—further talks are expected.  9&10 News
  • Traverse City officials approved a separation agreement with outgoing city manager Elizabeth Vogel, with $112,071 set to cover unused vacation time and short-term leave—Vogel will resign on Thursday and commissioners may ask the city clerk to serve as interim manager until a new hire is made.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
