  • Leelanau Conservancy is reviving the long-dormant Sugar Loaf site by seeking $8M to secure a 285-acre donation and has raised $6.5M so far— the group will hold a community input session on August 5 at Glen Arbor Township Hall and plans to reopen the site by 2026.  UpNorthLive
  • The Michigan Towing Association is hosting a 'move over' rally today at 6:00 p.m. in the Grand Traverse Mall parking lot to honor 25-year-old Keagan Spencer, a tow truck driver who died in December 2023 while working, and to urge drivers to slow down and give lane to roadside workers— a critical safety reminder for all.  9&10 News

  • Coast Guard rescue swimmers from Air Station Traverse City responded quickly after a welding shop explosion on July 31, when they confirmed the incident by phone and provided on-site emergency care to an injured person before EMS arrived — they used a personal vehicle to reach the scene promptly.  UpNorthLive

  • Following the Walmart stabbing on July 26, TCH Gear in Traverse City saw a surge in customers seeking concealed pistol licenses and firearm products as owner Gary Jurkovich said classes now fill within hours—customers include both current license holders and newcomers eager for self-defense training.  UpNorthLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Northern Michigan farmers are nearly finished with their wheat harvest and explained that heavy moisture last fall and winter lowered grain quality—while yields remain strong with USDA projections near record levels. Warm early summer weather sped up the process, and some areas further south saw better quality with less rainfall.  UpNorthLive

  • Peninsula Township faces a $50 million judgment after a judge ruled its zoning rules hurt local wineries, and Supervisor Maura Sanders has proposed selling township property & cutting budgets to protect residents from steep tax hikes. The board will discuss these plans on August 12 to decide how to meet the costs without overburdening taxpayers.  UpNorthLive
  • The Grand Traverse Band announced Wednesday that nearly 40 local applicants received $706,758 in gaming revenue grants, which is about 2% of video gaming revenue plus the Tribal Council votes twice a year to narrow 63 funding requests totaling nearly $2 million.
