COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Women and girls from Northern Michigan attended a workshop Saturday hosted by the Missaukee Conservation District to earn CPR certification and learn survival skills—skills that help them prepare for emergencies. The program partnered with District Health Department 10 and Arcturus Primitive Skills Academy to give hands-on outdoor training.  9&10 News
  • The Great Lakes Children's Museum will celebrate its 25th birthday with a themed party at its new Grand Traverse Mall location on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—the free event will feature sand art jars and a preview of the Legends of the Sleeping Bear Dunes exhibit opening in September, and visitors must register online.  UpNorthLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Traverse City is hosting a new food and wine festival that brings celebrity chefs, guided tours, and local tasting events + wine samples to celebrate the local food scene. Kim Zacharias said the event will highlight culinary talent and offer a fresh community experience.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Traverse City Area Public Schools could adopt a five-year strategic plan if the school board approves the proposal—decision details will be provided at an upcoming meeting.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • On August 4, the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation awarded 277 scholarships worth $509,728 to 223 high school seniors, college students and trade school students across five counties—supporting local education efforts. The foundation also granted $110,000 to 10 area schools earlier this year to further boost post-secondary opportunities.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grand Traverse County is using its $931,000 in marijuana funds from 16 recreational facilities to start a local grant program that splits the money 50/50 for community projects. Organizations must submit a five-page application on the county website from September 2 to October 1—county officials say the funds will help improve local projects.  UpNorthLive
  • U.S. Specialty Insurance Company is suing Peninsula Township and all parties involved in a winery lawsuit—claiming it should not pay part of a $50 million judgment along with extra legal fees and interest owed to 11 wineries and the Wineries of the Old Mission Peninsula trade group.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Grand Traverse County board commissioners approved a remodeling project to upgrade the first floor of the Governmental Center for an estimated $204,400—internal work and disposal fees are included in the final cost. The board will also meet today at 9 a.m. in the Second Floor Commission Chambers at 400 Boardman Ave to discuss plans for using opioid settlement funds.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The city will close the 600 block of Hastings Street between Hannah and Oakland on Aug. 12 for construction work that is expected to finish on Aug. 13—access to businesses and residences will remain open with posted signage. The Streets Division will also restrict eastbound traffic on Fourteenth Street between Union and Cass on Aug. 12 for asphalt repairs set to finish on Aug. 14, and they advise travelers to use alternate routes.  9&10 News
