  • The Traverse Bay Sunrise Rotary Club filled nearly 1,500 backpacks for students for the new school year on Tuesday and distributed them on Thursday in the Glenn Loomis gymnasium — work done by volunteers and community partners including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Traverse City Christian School, Michigan Department of Human Services, Single MOMM and Bethany Christian Services and Refugee Program.  UpNorthLive
  • Participants in the Thin Blue Shoreline Memorial Bike Ride raised almost $30,000 while riding a four-day, 360-mile route from Stevensville to Petoskey—stopping in Muskegon, Manistee, and Traverse City to honor fallen officers—and were escorted by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Police Department, and Michigan State Police.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Sewage spilled Wednesday at Lake Leelanau DNR Boat Ramp East and tests showed the area met Michigan EGLE standards for wading, fishing, and boating—however, water contact above the waist remains under a Level 2 advisory with additional samples scheduled for Thursday.  UpNorthLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cherry Capital Airport will hold a full-scale emergency drill on August 20 at 9 a.m.—the 2.5‑hour simulation will test plans for an aircraft accident with partners such as the Traverse City Fire Department and TSA while regular terminal traffic continues.  9&10 News
  • The Downtown Development Authority Board will review an eight‐page policy for Rotary Square at 9 a.m. Friday at the Governmental Center to set rules for events along Union Street downtown—staff have spent a year working on the policy, which mirrors the city’s Parks and Public Land Use Policy.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Traffic patterns have been shifted to allow contractors to start building a new roundabout where M-22 and M-72 meet. Starting Tuesday, drivers on Grandview Parkway will follow the repaved road—one lane in each direction—for six to eight weeks while work continues.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
