COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 300 block of Cedar Street between Sixth and Seventh is closed for an emergency sewer repair that began Friday and will have no through-access until Tuesday, Aug. 19—Seventh Street from Division to Spruce will reopen Monday.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Accidentals, an alt-folk band from Traverse City, are touring and recording while working on a new album — their schedule runs like a three-ring musical circus with many collaborative projects.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jessica Willis, director of Northwest Michigan Works!, said that adult education is at risk after the Michigan House passed a budget that merged its funding with general per-pupil funds—this change may cut or eliminate GED, literacy, and career training programs relied on by local adults.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An Australian man was prohibited from entering the US when he tried to join his new wife in Traverse City—immigration officials halted his arrival on August 16th.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The Downtown Development Authority approved a new policy for using Rotary Square, a half-acre space at 203 S. Union Street — directly across from the Traverse City Post Office. The policy sets a $250 fee and requires insurance for events and activities.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Plans for a new mid-block crosswalk along State Street are moving ahead as the Downtown Development Authority gave Executive Director Harry Burkholder permission on Friday to work with the city Engineering Department—this $277,000 project is part of the two-way traffic pilot that began in 2022 and will be reviewed by the City Commission in December.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • When Senior Project FRESH moved to an online system this year, the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging started a paper coupon program—helping seniors without internet—and formed ties with local farm markets to deliver fresh produce. The county made the change after noting some seniors could not use online services—ensuring everyone had a way to get healthy food.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Susan Odgers, a longtime Traverse City resident and educator at Northwestern Michigan College who has used a wheelchair for 49 years, said that at dinner with her husband Tom her cell phone ringing signaled a new chapter in her life—one that may change her personal path.
