ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Coast Guard crew from Traverse City rescued four people stranded on the Frankfort breakwater late Monday night as hazardous weather and 30-foot sea sprays made the rescue complex—no injuries were reported and the crew received a Bravo Zulu for their brave efforts.  9&10 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Cecilia Clary, a Traverse City witness to the July 18 Walmart stabbing, said she is working to heal after watching Bradford James Gille attack people with a knife—even as police took him into custody and he now stays at a treatment center waiting for court steps.  9&10 News
  • Michigan State Police trooper Charles Sierzputowski was arrested Tuesday for perjury and obstruction of justice after he allegedly lied in his wife's DUI trial in Grand Traverse County—he has been on unpaid leave since August 22 and the case is now managed by the Leelanau County Prosecuting Attorney's office.  UpNorthLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Great Lakes Children's Museum will close its Curiosity Place from Sept. 1 through Sept. 4 to install new interactive exhibits—it will reopen for play from Sept. 5 to Sept. 7 before closing again until Sept. 10 and resuming regular hours on Sept. 11. Families are advised to plan visits accordingly.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer signed bipartisan bills Tuesday that make it illegal to create or share AI-generated sexual deepfakes without consent (the law protects Michigan residents) and she signed a measure honoring a fallen officer from 2024.  9&10 News
  • Cherry Capital Airport has named its first police chief—Joseph Fitzgerald—bringing over 35 years of law enforcement experience. He is building a team of six officers to improve security and meet federal requirements.  UpNorthLive
  • A detour will begin Sept. 3 on US-31 near Interlochen as MDOT contractors start a $32.5 million project to rebuild 7.8 miles of highway. The work will remove poor soil, repair pavement and add safety features with temporary lane widening scheduled to begin Sept. 2 in 2026 — all aimed at keeping traffic moving safely.  9&10 News
  • The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin a $32.5 million roadwork project on US-31 near Interlochen on Tuesday, September 3 that will detour through-traffic using local roads until work ends on Saturday, October 18. The project will rebuild a 7.8-mile stretch to add center left-turn lanes, widened shoulders and rumble strips for improved safety.  UpNorthLive
