COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The inaugural Traverse City Mural Festival kicks off tomorrow and continues through Sept. 17 featuring several events and seven mural projects along the Eighth Street corridor — from Lake Avenue to Barlow Street.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Traverse City held a ceremony at GT Memorial Park yesterday to honor those who died in the September 11 attacks — the Metro Fire Department and local groups led a flag ceremony with a three-bell show starting at 8:30 a.m. The event featured a prayer, a speech, and a moment of silence.  UpNorthLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Village at Grand Traverse Commons will host the inaugural Up North Cider Festival this Sunday from 2—6:30 p.m. with over 60 cider varieties by 14 makers and live entertainment and food on offer.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Traverse City Area Public School officials urge district families to complete the Free and Reduced Meal Application by Oct. 1 — ensuring funds can be secured for school meal programs.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Eighth Street between Union Street and Boardman Avenue had intermittent flag control and south sidewalk closures that began Sept. 11 and will continue through Sept. 16 for replacement of private galvanized water lines — Team Elmer’s from the Traverse City Water/Wastewater Maintenance Division manages the work — and alternate routes are advised.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The Downtown Development Authority, or DDA, has not published an annual report in two years; its last update was posted in 2022—ending its longstanding practice of sharing details on downtown financial health and business mix.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Traverse City officials will ask the City Commission on September 15 to decide on park projects funded by $3 million from the Brown Bridge Trust Fund if a November ballot proposal is approved—plans include improved beach access, new trails, and playground equipment with any unused funds returned. The projects are based on community survey input from the Brown Bridge Trust Fund committee.  9&10 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The MDHHS is testing for chemical exposure in northern Michigan by inviting residents in Peninsula Township and Traverse City to provide blood and urine samples for PFAS, lead, and mercury as part of an ongoing monitoring program. MDHHS staff will be in the area in early October to conduct testing.  UpNorthLive
