- ➤ Proprietor Jim Brouwer opened a store that displays thousands of vintage shoes dating back to the 1930s. He said his fourth generation business—started by his daughter—uses old shoe-making techniques that modern factories no longer follow, and visitors can make appointments to see the collection. 9&10 News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Earlier this summer, Alluvion Arts at Common Grounds held wheatpasting classes that taught locals to use a flour-and-water mix to create temporary street art on their parking garage—participants brought their own pictures for display. The wheatpaste lasts 6 to 12 months and can be removed with a power wash. 9&10 News
- ➤ City Opera House will launch a new fall season with the MSUFCU Platinum Series and Raymond James Ovation Series, showcasing acoustic acts, storytelling, and family-friendly shows—executive director Chad Lindsey said the varied lineup will bring fresh energy to live performances. - ➤ The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is hosting its annual sturgeon release ceremony today—700 sturgeon will be released into the Boardman-Ottoway River as part of a 20-year plan to restore native fish—with the public invited to attend. Traverse City Record-Eagle
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Traverse City area is emerging as a leader in blue tech as groundbreaking took place last Friday for the Freshwater Research and Innovation Center in Elmwood Township—this site, formerly home to the Great Lakes Children’s Museum, is a joint project involving Discovery Pier, Northwestern Michigan College, Michigan Tech, 20Fathoms and Traverse Connect. The $28.9M center will house wet labs, a technical maker space, a water test tank, classrooms and public exhibit space and is expected to be completed in March 2027. 9&10 News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting Monday at 11am, the Great Michigan Compost Tour will visit 10 stops in Northern Michigan led by the Michigan Recycling Coalition and Michigan Organics Council, including on-farm composting at Timothy’s Conscious Compost and a family fun day at the SEEDS Compost petting zoo—designed to show how composting improves soils and reduces erosion. Additional stops include a Soil Lovers Social at Interlochen and tours in Traverse City and Emmet County to offer hands-on learning about compost benefits. 9&10 News

- ➤ County public works responded to four recent construction mishaps that damaged water and sewer lines in Garfield Township—discussed Thursday, the Board noted rising repair costs to the public. Traverse City Record-Eagle
- ➤ City and planning commissioners in Traverse City asked for a chart that compares the Michigan State Housing Development Authority programs + two new state laws and Neighborhood Enterprise Zones. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Traverse City therapist Daniel Herd warned that suicide rates are rising and stressed that warning signs like hopelessness & detachment need quick support during Suicide Awareness Month. He advised families to stay calm and help loved ones seek care by using the Munson Emergency Access Center or calling 988 for immediate help. 9&10 News
