  • All Kids Thrive has launched a survey for families in Northern Michigan to pinpoint needs and connect them with essential services. The nonprofit partnered with Region V for Kids to focus on disaster preparedness and quality of life for families at higher risk for health disparities—such as those with asthma or disabilities.  9&10 News

  • Donna Probes, M.B.A., retired from the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce and now a SCORE volunteer, explained that not making a choice can leave small businesses stuck. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northwestern Michigan College unveiled a 33,530 square foot aviation hangar Monday that cuts the two-year waitlist and allows the program to admit 50 new students instead of 30 each fall. The expansion added 16,500 square feet — making room for eight new planes and raising the total capacity to 19 airplanes.  9&10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Torch Lake faces an environmental challenge as invasive Quagga Mussels, estimated at 40 billion, threaten its food chain while the Torch Lake Protection Alliance studies water quality. The Alliance will drop buoys tomorrow and use its ROV — to capture photos of mussel expansion for a three-year study report.  UpNorthLive

  • A budget impasse in the Michigan Legislature has put a state government shutdown at risk—schools may not receive state aid to plan budgets or provide healthy meals, endangering the TC-piloted 10 Cents a Meal program.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
