- ➤ KAIR will host its Kampout food drive from October 6th to 11th in Kalkaska to help fill food pantry shelves as officials expect a 25% rise in need for support; drop-off locations will accept donations from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. — monetary donations will also be accepted in person and online. - ➤ Benzie Central High School teacher Danielle Schafer will shave her long hair at the homecoming assembly on September 26 if her fundraiser reaches $5,000—she has raised $3,500 so far to fund a travel program that will take over 30 students to Washington DC in May for meetings and mock sessions. - ➤ Housing advocates in Northwest Michigan are asking state legislators to add a $10M Rapid Response Housing Fund to the state budget that will help communities build or fix affordable housing for teachers, medical workers, first responders and small business employees. The fund will provide low-cost capital to support new construction and renovations for workforce housing. UpNorthLive
- ➤ Traverse City will remove the nearly 50-year-old green galvanized steel bridge—once providing a safe way for pedestrians from Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park to the beach—overnight Sept. 20-21 as part of an $8.5-million state park renovation funded by American Rescue Plan Act dollars. Traverse City Record-Eagle
- ➤ Plans for a nearly $20-million housing and market development at Lot O, a city-owned parking lot downtown, will be reviewed by the Downtown Development Authority Board on Friday at 9 a.m. (Representatives of Homestretch Nonprofit Housing will join the meeting as part of nearly five years of work to boost local workforce housing opportunities.) - ➤ The City of Traverse City announced that its contractor will begin paving Eleventh Street the week of Sept. 22 with intermittent closures at Union and Eleventh and Cass and Eleventh as the project is expected to be completed on Sept. 26, weather permitting—drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians will face dust and noise. 9&10 News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ During national recovery month, Addiction Treatment Services in Traverse City treats about 1,500 patients a year and highlights efforts to reduce the stigma of substance use disorder. Program manager David Gloudemans—a former addict whose life changed with support—now guides new patients toward recovery and a healthier future. 9&10 News
- ➤ District Health Department #10 will offer several COVID and flu vaccine clinics across northern Michigan—walk-in sites include Bear Lake Community Church in Manistee on October 2 from 10 a.m. to noon with additional sessions planned in Scottville, Ludington, and Hart. Residents can schedule vaccines online or by phone to help reduce virus risks. UpNorthLive
- ➤ In Traverse City, the More Than Four Foundation will hold its 5.04K run/walk on Saturday, Sept. 20 with a new Kids Dash beginning at 9:15 a.m. at the corner of Union and Eighth streets—race proceeds will fund pediatric cancer research and honor founder Conor Rigan, who was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor as an infant. - ➤ Grand Traverse County commissioners voted unanimously to select Mike Lahey to lead the health department after Wendy Hirschenberger retired in June — Lahey has worked with the county for 13 years and is currently serving as interim health officer. Traverse City Record-Eagle
