COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Twelfth Street between Union and Cass will close for reconstruction from Sept. 24 to Nov. 14—sidewalks in the area will also be worked on, while sidewalk repairs on 16th Street south side and Veterans Drive will begin Monday, Sept. 22—closing the east-west ramp at Boughey and the adjacent sidewalk. Eleventh Street between Union and Cass is set for paving from Sept. 22 to Sept. 26.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Traverse City schools are asking families to complete the free and reduced meals paperwork to support school funding — the form takes 5 to 8 minutes to fill out and must be submitted by Oct. 1.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Teacher Danielle Schafer of Benzie Central High School will shave all 12 inches of her hair during Sept. 26 homecoming if $5,000 is raised for the travel program that funds a trip to Washington D.C.—the funds will allow every student who signed up to attend.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan DNR warned residents in Northern Michigan about rising fire risks from dry weather plus debris from an ice storm and urged caution during outdoor activities since most wildfires start from human actions.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan State Police warn that a proposed FY26 budget will cut more than $40 million and nearly 300 posts, forcing reductions in overtime and patrols — changes that could hurt rural areas like Isabell County that rely on state police — and may even lead to layoffs of new recruits. Col. James F. Grady II said the moves take a major step backward for public safety.  9&10 News
  • At Friday’s meeting, the Downtown Development Authority Board approved its leadership roles and committee assignments for the coming year and re-elected Ed Slosky as board chair. Slosky has led the board since February after Scott Hardy resigned—citing issues with the City Commission.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A $20 million housing and market project at Lot O received a letter of support from the Downtown Development Authority. Homestretch Nonprofit Housing Corp. will build a five-story mixed-use building with 44 housing units and over 4,000 square feet of retail space for a grocery and farmers market—adding new options downtown.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
