COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Northern Michigan farms are drawing visitors this October by offering apples, cider and corn mazes as part of agritourism—King Orchards in Antrim County has welcomed families from Chicago, Detroit and nearby areas. Farmers work hard to keep the orchards safe for guests even when some visitors cause damage—challenges they believe are worth meeting during harvest.  9&10 News
  • The Boardman Lake Loop Trail was closed on Oct. 15 from the Hull Park pedestrian bridge to the restroom and will close again from Oct. 22-28 to replace the boathouse roof at Hull Park — the city's solar-panel project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant includes the boathouse and costs $1,685,479 funded by a Michigan Public Service Commission Low Carbon Infrastructure Enhancement & Development Grant.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Short’s Brewing Company tests new beer ideas at its Bellaire facility—brewing small batches and using festivals for feedback before sending fall brews like Pure Michigan Fall IPA and Pumpkin Crusher to store shelves within a week while keeping its Bellaire pub and Elk Rapids Pull Barn as community hubs.  9&10 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Traverse Connect has opened registration for its annual Economic Summit on November 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, where local business leaders will network, showcase companies, and hold panel talks on economic trends. Reserved tables at $550 and individual tickets at $65 for members + $85 for non-members are available, with sales closing on October 21 and October 28 respectively.  9&10 News
  • Northwest Michigan Works! will host a free fall hiring event on Nov. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its service center at 1209 S. Garfield Ave. in Traverse City. Employers from retail, hospitality, and manufacturing will meet job seekers in the Networks Northwest Conference Room—participants should bring résumés and register online since the event is free and open to the public.  9&10 News

  • The International Affairs Forum debuts its inaugural gala 'An Evening of Global Perspective' at Northwestern Michigan College’s Hagerty Center today—former Rep. Peter Meijer will speak as student voices, live music and dinner by Grand Traverse Bay support educational programming.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A grassroots group in Northwest Michigan is raising awareness of breast cancer rates by proposing a resolution at the Grand Traverse County Board today. Commissioner TJ Andrews is expected to present a plan to designate the second Saturday in October as Check Your Cherries Day.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Garfield Township supervisors renewed the special assessment for lakeshore owners on Silver Lake to pay a tax for five more years to control eurasian watermilfoil on Tuesday. During a brief public hearing, Scot Ogden (Silver Lake Improvement Association’s vice president) supported the measure that dates to 2009.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Munson Healthcare opened the High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinic at Cowell Family Cancer Center to help high-risk women get early detection—1 in 8 women will face invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a dramatic win, the St. Francis Gladiators advanced to face Marquette in their next game — the result sets up a crucial contest.  9&10 News
  • During a boys’ soccer playoff game on Tuesday night in Traverse City — a video shows a yellow-uniformed referee pushing a Gaylord player on the sideline — officials are reviewing the incident. The Michigan High School Athletic Association and the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor’s Office have been contacted for comment.  9&10 News
