- ➤ On October 15th, the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight brought veterans from Washington, D.C. home to Cherry Capital Airport—over 200 people welcomed them as veterans shared memories of service and struggles readjusting after their separation from home. 9&10 News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Community members, environmental professionals and researchers will attend the 18th Annual Freshwater Summit later this month on Oct. 30 at the Hagerty Center at Northwestern Michigan College from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Keynote speaker Stephanie Mills will open the event with a talk on bioregionalism while experts present on research and projects that protect the Great Lakes. 9&10 News
- ➤ A geomagnetic storm is set to bring northern lights to Michigan from Thursday night through today—forecasters report the storm may produce green and red hues even though a peak K-index of 6 is expected instead of the usual 7 needed for a clear display. UpNorthLive
- ➤ The Grand Traverse Area Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby will host a climate film and dialogue event at 6 p.m. Oct. 23 in the McGuire Community Room at the Traverse Area District Library—after screening 'The Light Won’t Dim', local speakers will explain clean energy programs and a passive home project while drinks and snacks are provided. - ➤ The Michigan Department of Transportation will close part of M-72 at the roundabout starting 4 a.m. Monday, October 20 until 10 p.m. Tuesday for paving near the intersection and Tom’s Food Market. Motorists must follow detour routes via Gray Road—Cedar Run Road—West Front Street—and US-31/M-37 to reconnect with M-72. UpNorthLive
- ➤ About 120 soldiers from the Michigan Army National Guard’s 1430th Engineer Company will deploy to the Southwest Border to support federal law enforcement efforts. A departure ceremony is today at 11 a.m. at Western Michigan University’s Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo—officials say the deployment may last up to a year. 9&10 News
