COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger has fought food insecurity for over 35 years and processed over 30,000 pounds of venison this year from local deer processors — including first-time participant Klemmers Processing — to help food banks, shelters, and churches. Processors in Northern Michigan can join by following the website guidelines.  9&10 News
  • The Traverse City Track Club will hold its Zombie Run — a fun, costumed fall event — on Oct. 25 downtown where hundreds of participants will run and walk to raise funds. All proceeds will benefit TART Trails and support local recreation and transportation projects.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Botanical Gardens at Historic Barns Park hosted a presentation on indigenous farming techniques that drew a large crowd to learn how staff are reviving crops not grown for over a century. Indigenous activist Tara John and garden staff combined traditional knowledge with Western science to heal the soil and mend historical wrongs—promising new growth on long-neglected land.  9&10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from the Charlevoix Emmet Intermediate School District took part in a mock search and rescue mission at Boyne Highlands near Harbor Springs to learn how public safety teams work together—using roles from law enforcement to EMS.   • Michigan families may face a pause in November SNAP benefits as the USDA directed MDHHS to delay benefit issuance due to a federal funding lapse — the decision will affect about 1.4 million households and SNAP retailers should provide updates as they become available.  UpNorthLive
  • Grand Traverse County planned to distribute $500,000 from taxes on adult-use marihuana to eligible groups—nonprofits, schools, and economic development organizations—with 81 applications totaling over $4.8 million received and awards ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 to be determined later this fall.  9&10 News
  • Police in Benzie County are stepping up enforcement of school bus safety laws today as part of Operation Safe Stop to protect students from drivers who ignore flashing red lights and extended stop arms. Local officials reported that violators face fines up to $500 and three license points—officials added the campaign runs through today.  UpNorthLive
  • M-72 traffic in Traverse City and Elmwood Township will be detoured on Monday, October 27 to complete paving at the new roundabout where M-72 meets M-22. The road closure will last from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.—detour routes via Gray Road, Cedar Run Road, West Front Street, and Division Street are in place, weather permitting.  UpNorthLive

    Michigan Indian Legal Services (MILS) is seeking to fill a part-time or 3⁄4-time Financial Administrator position to be stationed in the Traverse City office. The Financial Administrator is responsible for the non-direct client services aspects of the administration and operation of MILS, particularly in fiscal, property, and statistical matters. The Financial Administrator position is responsible for and performs a variety of technical and professional accounting work and support functions related to the operation of MILS, including such areas as accounts payable and receivable, payroll, general ledger, financial and cash reports and statements, grants, and budget.
