COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Northwestern Michigan College’s BUS 231 class hosts a Spooky Glow Skate today from 6-8 p.m. at Howe Ice Arena in the Grand Traverse County Civic Center to support the Thanks-for-Giving project—participants pay $10 with a $5 skate rental and will enjoy costume prizes and a bake sale, while food donations are accepted through Nov. 18.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gemini Moon, an indie-pop/rock duo from northern Michigan, will perform at Old Mission Distilling in Traverse City on Nov. 1 — showing their appreciation for local music fans.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • A cornfield maze featuring the Grateful Dead’s iconic Steal Your Face logo has been carved in a local field to honor the legendary band—creating a unique fall attraction for visitors. Local fans are set to experience the tribute as the season continues.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity shows the disability employment gap is narrowing as 32% of disabled people in Michigan are working, compared to just over 22% nationally during National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Local resources in Northern Michigan help disabled workers navigate benefit challenges and access new work incentives + support from groups like the Disability Network of Northern Michigan is growing.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The outside northbound lane of Garfield Avenue south of Carver Street will close for repairs starting at 7:30 a.m. Oct 27 and will reopen by the end of Oct 28 — signage will be in place and access to homes and businesses will be maintained while motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians use alternate routes.  9&10 News
  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said SNAP benefits for November will be paused due to a federal funding lapse & the delay is set to affect 1.4 million Michiganders who rely on the program for food assistance.  9&10 News
  • Drivers in Traverse City and Elmwood Township must expect a detour on Monday, October 27 as crews complete paving at the M-72 and M-22 intersection. MDOT began work on October 20 but paused due to rain—officials say the project will finish safely despite potential short delays.  UpNorthLive
