COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bill Sweet of Sweet’s Bar and Grill was named Veteran of the Year by the Grand Traverse Area Veterans Coalition for his 116-mile walk in May that raised awareness for veterans at Reining Liberty Ranch, showing his commitment to fellow servicemembers. Marilyn Dear was also recognized as Veterans Supporter of the Year for her ongoing local advocacy.  UpNorthLive
  • Arthur Watt, a decorated veteran who worked as a plant manager in aerospace after World War II, wrote a letter to his grandchildren that shares his experiences and sense of duty—his family approved sharing the letter with the community in honor of Veterans Day.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Traverse City Light and Power will switch to time-of-use billing next month, which means higher rates when demand is up and lower rates during off-peak hours to support cleaner energy. The utility is hosting open houses today at its Service Center with sessions (noon to 1 p.m., 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.) to explain the new rate plan.  UpNorthLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The northern lights lit the sky Wednesday night as intense solar eruptions reached Earth — cloud cover in northern Michigan made the display hard to see locally. Astronomy professor Jerry Dobek explained the phenomenon, part of the sun’s 11-year cycle, could cause satellite and cell phone interference in the coming days.  UpNorthLive
  • Little Traverse Conservancy is working to protect farmland in five counties in northern Michigan, including farms in Harbor Springs and Petoskey, and is partnering with local governments to secure conservation easements for farmers.   • In Northern Michigan, Rep. Prestin has proposed a bill to allow paramedics on basic life support units to give restricted advanced life support—aiming to reduce long emergency transport times in rural areas. HEALTH NEWS

  • Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center reports it is expanding its trauma services by using over 67 percent of its American Rescue Plan Act award and a $700,000 county grant from December 2022—efforts that will improve support for children and families across northwestern Michigan.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

  • Traverse City Central defeated Cadillac 25-21, 25-12, 21-25 and 27-25 in Tuesday’s Division 1 volleyball regional semifinal at Mount Pleasant, winning two out of three matches against the Vikings. The Trojans now aim for a second regional title.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • The Traverse Area Alliance Girls Rugby team finished third in the state championships this weekend—coming off a perfect 10-0 regular season as the top seed in the playoffs.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Traverse City Christian volleyball fell behind 2-1 but won two sets against Bellaire and advanced to the regional final happening today at 6 p.m. in Onekama, hosted by Buckley — a small craft advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. with gusts up to 30 kts and waves around 7 feet affecting Grand Traverse Bay.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Traverse City St. Francis beat Johannesburg-Lewiston 25 to 16, 25 to 9, and 25 to 18 in a Charlevoix semifinal and will head north for today's regional volleyball finals in Battle Creek—this win secured their spot in the tournament.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
