Good morning, Traverse City. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 23rd of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Traverse City officials and community partners enforced a camping ban in the Pines, assembled a homelessness task force, and made progress toward permanent supportive housing while keeping the Safe Harbor shelter open year-round to help those in need. However, the local emergency shelter lacks enough beds for the coming winter — and federal funding cuts threaten to further jeopardize support for vulnerable individuals.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local pre-teen dancer Haven Rieck—of Company Dance Traverse through Dance Arts Academy—qualified as Outstanding Dancer runner-up in the mini category in Lansing and later competed at NYC Dance Alliance nationals in Phoenix. A choreographer known for Wicked awarded her for her dance skills, marking an important milestone in her ongoing journey.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 160-foot pedestrian bridge was installed Friday at the old Sabin Dam site, linking the Boardman River Nature Center with over 40 miles of trails. The $1.5 million project will open to the public in spring — a key local trail hub — and connects to a 41-mile loop of paths.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
