  • On Wednesday, Q100 Radio held the 'Pros vs Joes' race at Penrod’s to raise funds for River House—a shelter for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault—and to support an upcoming marathon on July 26. Jerry Coyne’s team finished the head-to-head race in 54 minutes.  9&10 News
  • The Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference will come to Glen Arbor on August 18—19 at The Leelanau School with workshops, farm tours, and keynote speakers, organized by the Crosshatch Center for Art and Ecology. Now in its 25th year, the event will share ideas on organic farming and community-based food solutions to attract young growers.  9&10 News

  • On July 4, ICE Detroit arrested 25-year-old Kleiber Siso Balza, a suspected member of Tren De Aragua, in Traverse City + he faces a warrant from Virginia for burglary tools and a pending larceny charge in Florida while three other illegal residents were also arrested.  UpNorthLive

  • A new mural festival will be held in Downtown Traverse City from Sept. 12 to 17. The event — organized by the Art Commission and the Downtown Development Authority — will bring unique art and activities to a different part of downtown.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Traverse City Area Public Schools approved over $3 million to renovate the Sabin Data Center at 2075 Cass Road—this project will house the district’s human resources and business departments. The TCAPS Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday and selected 10 contractors to carry out the work.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Organizers of Swim for Grand Traverse Bay are seeking volunteers for the two-mile open water swim event on Aug. 9 in Suttons Bay to support local water protection efforts. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt + pancake breakfast and help with roles such as packet pickup, setup, and safety tasks.  9&10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Peninsula Township will appeal a judge’s decision awarding nearly $50 million in damages to 11 wineries that challenged township zoning. Township trustees voted 6—0 to ask the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider the ruling as residents remain divided on whether the appeal is the best path to a favorable settlement.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
