COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Horse North Rescue is hosting its Fall Festival & Tack Sale on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1476 N. Betsie River Road in Interlochen, where visitors can meet 10 horses, play kids games, join in crafts, and enjoy cider and donuts. All funds raised will help care for the horses rescued and prepare them for new homes — a volunteer-run effort.  UpNorthLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened October 1 for the 2026 to 2027 school year and many colleges also require the College Scholarship Service Profile for additional aid. Vicki L. Beam, a college planner at Michigan College Planning in Traverse City, advises students to check each college's website for deadlines and specific requirements.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The League of Women Voters—Grand Traverse Area is holding a program to update counties' material management plans that will help reduce landfill waste by boosting recycling and composting methods in northwestern lower Michigan. State rules require these plans to guide proper waste collection and disposal across all counties.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan Christmas tree growers have received USDA funds to help MSU research ways to fight two root diseases that threaten holiday crops. Bill Lindberg from MSU Extension said the new funds will support studies on controlling the spread of the diseases in wet weather — a serious risk to farms.  UpNorthLive
  • Traverse City commissioners will discuss a new ethics ordinance for public servants; an ad hoc committee drafted a policy—defining ethical violations and penalties for elected officials, employees and committee members.  UpNorthLive
