COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA presented expansion plans on Wednesday night to the Garfield Township Planning Commission that would add about 20,000 square feet to its facility and over 100 new parking spaces. The project requires a permit amendment and a public hearing is scheduled for November 12—feedback on the proposal will be considered then.  UpNorthLive
  • State Rep. Mike McFall introduced House Bill 5063 to offer a $50 monthly tax credit for foster caregivers as Great Lakes Humane Society director Linda Gottwald said shelters often turn away up to eight animals a week—showing the need for more fosters. The society is hosting an event tomorrow at Serra Subaru in Traverse City where residents can donate, meet animals, and receive a pumpkin while being urged to adopt instead of shop.  UpNorthLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • For 43 years, Maritime Heritage Alliance has connected locals with Great Lakes history. The nonprofit moved its boat shop from across Discovery Pier—its fleet remains under a 20-year agreement while ship maintenance, classes and events will now take place at the new workshop at 3820 Cass Road.  Traverse City Record-Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cherry Capital Airport officials said Wednesday that the federal government shutdown had little impact on operations so far—officials worry that a prolonged shutdown will cause more problems later.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
  • Today, a new police substation opened at 128 West State Street in downtown Traverse City — the facility gives officers space to complete reports, follow investigations and take breaks.  Traverse City Record-Eagle
